Breast Augmentation

First interactive web-based 3D physical simulator for breast augmentation

Breast augmentation, otherwise known as augmentation mammoplasty, is performed to increase the size of a woman’s breasts. Our breast surgeon, Dr Sng performs this procedure for women who have small breasts. Often these ladies have been conscious about their small size for a long time, and they get a boost of self-confidence after the procedure with their new fuller appearance. It is also a useful procedure for women who have have lost some fullness of the breast after pregnancy and breast-feeding. Augmentation helps to replace some of the volume they have lost.

Breast augmentation can change the size and shape of the breasts but there are limitations - it cannot move breasts closer together on the chest, nor can it lift breasts that are very droopy.

Most commonly, breast augmentation is performed using breast implants. Implants come in a range of sizes and shapes and the choice of implant depends on the individual woman’s body and change they desire.

For women who want only a small increase in size, the use of fat grafts is also a possibility.

Is it safe to have implants?
Yes. Although there was some concern about silicone implants causing autoimmune disease some years ago, this was subsequently shown to be unrelated. More recently there was the issue of PIP implants which contained industrial-grade silicone.

We use Allergan and Mentor implants which contain only top medical-grade silicone. These 2 implant makers have conducted long-running studies ensuring the safety of their implants. Scientific studies have also shown that implants do not cause breast cancer

How do I choose my implants??
There are 2 main types of implants – saline and silicone. They come in 2 shapes - round and tear-drop or anatomic. The choice of implant depends on the shape and the size that you wish to achieve. It is important to note that the final shape and size of your new breasts depends not just on the choice of implant but also the original size and shape of your breasts and the structure of your chest wall and ribs. Dr Sng will help you to choose an implant according to the dimensions of your chest and your breast tissue, keeping in mind your preferences for your breast shape and size.

What is the procedure like?
Breast augmentation is a day surgery procedure performed under general anaesthesia. There may be some mild swelling and bruising after. You will be required to wear a postoperative bra/strapping. Sutures are removed about 10 days later.

What is the recovery time?
You should be able to return to work about a week after surgery. This varies with the nature of your job.
