Breast Reduction

Why do people undergo Breast Reduction?

Some women have oversized and heavy breasts, leading to neck, back or shoulder strain due to the added weight of their breasts. They may also develop a rash under the breasts, that causes great discomfort. The added weight of the breasts also causes them to sag over time.

Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, reduces the size of the breast by removing breast tissue, fat and skin, followed by reshaping the remaining breast tissue. This results in a smaller, proportionate breast with a more aesthetically pleasing shape.

Due to the functional problems often associated with over-sized breasts, this may be considered a medical condition. Hence large volume breast reduction surgery may be a Medisave and / or insurance claimable procedure.

What is the procedure like?

Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and takes about 4-6 hours. There will be surgical drains that are removed after 1-2 days. Postoperative hospital stay is also required for 1-2 days and sutures are removed after 1-2 weeks.

What is the recovery time?

You should be able to return to work after 1-2 weeks. You will need to wear a post-surgical support bra round the clock to better facilitate recovery.
