As women, our bodies have their own unique features, and the same is true of our female genitalia. Yet many women are uncomfortable with the appearance of their intimate areas. Pregnancies, aging and hormones can result in unwanted changes, resulting in aesthetic and functional concerns.
One of the most common frustrations is excess tissue on the labia minora, which can cause embarrassment or discomfort during intercourse, or can get caught in undergarments, or get pinched or abraded during exercise. Labiaplasty is a procedure that removes excess labia tissue.
Associated procedures can also help to rejuvenate the appearance of the surrounding tissue such as the mons and the labia majora.
Labiaplasty is done under local anaesthesia with sedation, as day surgery. It takes about 1-2 hours.
As this is a sensitive area, postoperative care is important. It is best to take a few days off work to rest and ice the area to minimise swelling and facilitate recovery. It is also best to avoid strenuous exercise and intercourse for a few weeks until the wounds are stable.
